Jul 18, 2003 - DV8 Wins PSL Cup

DV8 with trophy

A field of 24 teams entered the PSL Cup, and on July 18, 2004 DV8 was crowned PSL Cup Champions. En route to the finals DV8 faced Shamrock Harps in the First Round (5-2), Afriscope in the Second Round (1-0), World United in the Quarter Finals (3-1) and Palo Alto in the Semi-Finals (6-0). The final was set between Portola Valley and DV8 after Portola Valley beat Casa Benfica 2-1 in the Semi-finals the previous week.

The final was a very tightly contested game. In the first half there were several opportunities at opposite ends of the field, but both teams were very evenly matched and scoreless at half time. With exceptionally solid defense and goal keeping form each team, it was obvious that one goal would likely be enough to seal a victory.

At the beginning of the second half, Portola Valley come out very strong and pressured the DV8 defense continuously; their left and right backs made offensive runs down the flanks to apply further pressure. It took a good 15 minutes for DV8 to settle back into the game and the midfield began to retain control of the ball again. After 70 minutes of play, DV8 scored their first goal after being awarded a penalty for tripping in the box. Now the pressure was really on, as Portola was down a goal and had to bring all their players into the attack since DV8 was quite willing to sit back with a 1-0 lead. Portola came extremely close to an equalizer as a free kick was issued just outside the 18 yard line in front of our goal. The kick was taken as DV8 was setting up the wall; DV8's keeper was on the near post when the unexpected kick was struck, but somehow the "Wulff-myster" managed to get all the way across the goal and save a shot that was soaring into the top corner of the net. How he managed to prevent the ball from going into the back of the net was a mystery to us all. This miraculous save gave DV8 a big lift, and in the 82nd minute of the game DV8 scored another goal with some exceptional passing that gave the Portola keeper no chance to save a strike 10 yards from his goal. A few minutes later the final whistle blew. DV8 showed great character and resilience to beat this powerhouse team 2-0. The massive PSL Cup trophy was a delight for everyone to see and hold. DV8's name is now inscribed forever in PSL history as the 2004 PSL Cup Champions!
